Double lip seals are used primarily to separate two fluids, usually in transmissions. An additional feature that can be included is a ‘weep’ hole in the cavity between the lips which vents to atmosphere.
This also prevents cross contamination in the case of leakage.
The Rubber is usually either silicone or fluoroelastomer, but nitrile can also be used for relatively slow rotating shafts and compatible oils.
