The combined rubber / metal OD offers the best solution, where the metal ensures the seal is secured firmly in the housing and the rubber ensures a good static seal in the housing. In addition, the pictures of these seals show hydro-dynamic aids which extend the life of the sealing lip, once the wear flat cannot maintain the fluid meniscus.
